Boulder revenue up in ’09
February 15, 2010 – Daily Camera – The city of Boulder sales and use tax collections rose by .7% in 2009, according to the city’s new sales tax report. City officials had expected tax revenue to be down by 1.9%. While good news, the city remains cautious. Much of the revenue gain in 2009 was in one-time money including the federal “Cash for Clunkers” program and large construction projects.
WSJ Article on Boulder’s Green Initiatives
February 15, 2010 – Daily Camera – According to some city leaders and environmental consultants, the front-page Wall Street Journal article, “Even Boulder Finds It Isn’t Easy Going Green“, was outdated and overly negative. Kara Mertz, the city’s Local Environment Action Division (LEAD) manager, explained that the article used examples of 2007 and 2008 programs. Since they were introduced, “the city recognized that these programs were not successful enough to reach the greenhouse-gas reduction goals established by City Council, nor were they adequate to satisfy our community.” As a result, the city has shifted its focus from outreach to action.
Boulder ranked #1 for well-being and quality of life
February 15, 2010 – Daily Camera - According to a new Gallup-Healthways poll on American lifestyles and attitudes, Boulder is the top city for well-being and quality of life. The ranking is based on a survey of over 350,000 Americans on jobs, finances, physical health, emotional state and communities. The city was ranked #1 out of 162 large and medium-sized cities for overall well-being and work experience, #4 in healthy behaviors, #7 in physical health, #10 in access to basic needs for a healthy life, and #27 in emotional health.
CU Economist – Colorado economy to improve in 2010
December 7, 2009 – CoBIZ magazine - Colorado will fare better in 2010, CU’s economist says. The state’s economy will return to stability, however, according to Richard Wobbekind of the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Leeds School of Business. “We will still have some kinks to work through, but we see 2010 as a stabilizing year that will put the state economy in a position for more sustained growth in 2011 and 2012,” according to Wobbekind.
City urges residents to Buy into Boulder
November 21, 2009 – Daily Camera – In response to falling sales tax revenues, the city of Boulder has stepped up efforts to encourage shopping locally by launching a new Buy into Boulder website. According to the article, $3.41 of every $100 spent with Boulder businesses goes toward city programs. The new website provides information on local retailers, the programs funded by sales taxes and more.
